Preparing for your eye test: What you need to know

Preparing for your eye test may seem scary or overwhelming, which is why we have created this page to give you all the ins and outs of what to expect to make you feel at ease for your appointment.

As you step into ACO…you’ll notice that we do things differently here. From our extensive range of luxury and unique eyewear brands, to the in-house brand that we humbly designed and made locally. We embrace different, and want to provide you with the best healthcare and retail experience possible.

What does this mean? It means we spend more time with you during your eye examination (4o minutes to be exact) to ensure we do not miss any details and are precise with the prescription/measurements taken. We take the time selecting your frames suited for your face shape and skin tone, as we want you to leave our store happy with your choice. Being an independent optometry practice, we understand the need for a more personable approach and that is exactly what you will get with us.

Comprehensive Eye Test

A thorough evaluation of your vision and eye health conducted by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. This examination goes beyond simply assessing visual acuity (how well you see) and includes various tests to check the overall health of your eyes and identify any potential vision problems or eye diseases.

Components typically included in a comprehensive eye test:

  1. Visual Acuity Test: This is the familiar test where you read letters or symbols from a chart to asses how well you see at various distances.
  2. Refraction Assessment: This determines if you need prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct any refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
  3. Eye Muscle Movement Test: This assesses the coordination of your eye muscles and how well your eyes work together.
  4. Visual Field Test: Also known as perimetry, this test evaluates your peripheral vision and can detect conditions like glaucoma or neurological disorders.
  5. Eye Health Evaluation: This includes an examination of the external and internal structures of the eye using specialised equipment. It helps to detect conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment.
  6. Intraocular Pressure Measurement: This test checks the pressure inside your eyes, which is important for diagnosing and managing conditions like glaucoma.
  7. Additional Testing: Depending on your age, medical history, and any specific concerns, your eye doctor may perform additional tests such as colour vision testing, evaluation of depth perception or assessment of eye focusing ability.

Pre-Test

Pre-testing involves a few steps to gain an understanding of your eye health and history. This includes filling out a form with information such as: cataract or laser surgeries, eye disease in the family, if you wear glasses or contacts and why you have specifically come in for an eye test. We will also use a vertometer which measures the prescription of current glasses you have been using. Then you may be asked to do an auto-refraction and have your eye pressure checked (using a tonometer).
