Gather on Gilles Street: Paddy Barry’s

You all might be thinking…this is a bit different! Well as we have settled in nicely to our new spot on Gilles street, we must say goodbye to our ‘Home is on Hutt Street’ series and welcome the new series that will be taking it’s place… ‘Gather on Gilles Street’

First up, we had the chance to speak to Jimmy; who’s the owner of a local Gilles Street hero; Paddy Barry’s.

Who is Paddy, and who is Barry…is there a story behind the name?

It’s an ode to family heritage. My surname is Barry and I wanted to include it in the name of the café as, my families bakery in Island is also called Barry. The once bakery is actually now ‘Kevin Barry’s’ supermarket.

What inspired the aesthetic of Paddy Barry’s?

When you look at the walls of Paddy Barry’s, you will notice that there are photographs, which are taken by friends. One of my friends Al, is a local illustrator who has assisted with the visual branding elements. The branding aesthetic is also inspired by German artist, Stefan Marx.

Can you tell me more about Paddy Barry’s roastery?

We currently roast our coffee in Port Adelaide, but the next step is to have a roastery operating on site. At the moment we are mostly roasting coffee from Latin America, but we are looking to branch out to different parts of the world.

Must try dish on the menu?

The bagels! They’re baked here by our former chef, who is now the owner of Holy Mother of Bagels, and the wholesale is based out of here. The bagels are fresh, and really good! Another one is the cauliflower toastie, which is also a favourite. Shout out to the chefs.

Best thing about Gilles Street?

Gilles street has a very good sense of community. Seeing regulars each day, and being on a street with schools, offices, and residents, is a good mix.

At ACO, our team loves that Paddy Barry is only a stone’s throw away, which is also mildly dangerous for our caffeine cravings, as the coffees are exceptional, and the environment is so welcoming! Thank you for the marvellous breakfast’s that we’ve experienced whilst having our weekly staff meeting during the past two months – many more to come!

Supporting local is very important as a small business, and creating that bond with other businesses and clients is unforgettable. We hope to continue that on Gilles street as we did when we were on Hutt street.

Please look forward to more of this series.
