This month’s Home is on Hutt Street is focused on the not-so-newbie of the street, The Sugar Man. It is always great when we can welcome a new small business to Hutt Street, especially if it involves food!
Located at 197 Hutt St (neighbour’s to Atelier Antifragile and the florist) you cannot miss the neon signs shaped like sweets. This boutique is known for it’s delicious chocolate bars and pastries, locally and freshly made by the man himself Alex Crawford.
Alex has spent numerous years mastering his divine creations across Adelaide’s café scene. From chocolates to macarons to cookies, the locals were certainly fans of Alex’s desserts.
After a trip overseas where he discovered quality chocolates and pastries made locally, it inspired him to reinvent the name Sugar Man and begin the process of opening a retail store in Adelaide.
The Sugar Man opened it’s doors in late February, and it has proved to be a success on the street.
When you walk into the store you will see local artwork hung on the walls and a display of all the available chocolate bars underneath glass cloches. Along with the core flavours that everyone has come to know and love, there are also the seasonal special releases and three single-origin blocks, including Venezuelan and Madagascan varieties. The gorgeous artwork created for the packaging of the chocolate blocks are designed and created by Alexandra Lloyd, who works alongside Alex.
What sets The Sugar Man apart from other chocolatiers you ask? The quirky flavour combinations! If you have the opportunity to try the milo, fairy bread or hot cross bun flavours they are so unique and mouth watering.
Another bonus is the freshly made pastry’s which are available on Saturdays. The almond croissant is a crowd pleaser but it is important to keep an eye out for other delicious seasonal varieties which could be available at any time.
Recently, The Sugar Man collaborated with 78 Degrees Distillery and created a whiskey like no other, including pastry’s in the recipe. The tasting profile describes it as sweet, buttery & complex.
We cannot wait to see what else is in store for The Sugar Man, as he continuously surprises us with his unique sweets.
If you are out and about across Adelaide you can discover The Sugar Man chocolate bars stocked at Barossa Cheese Company, Belair Fine Wines, Culture Shock Provisions, East End Cellars and the Smelly Cheese Shop.
The Sugar Man is open 5 days a week Wednesday-Friday 10-5pm and Saturday-Sunday 10-3pm (up the road from Adelaide City Optometrist)
