We believe that everyone should receive the most thorough eye care. That is why, besides all the standard procedures of an eye test, you should also expect to have a scan that not only serves to diagnose any signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration and other eye conditions, but above all, it serves as a baseline to track the progress of your vision for years to come. For this reason, our eye tests are 40 minutes long.

Actually, we have a much longer checklist to go through, but since you asked, the common things we look for are:

• Entering visual acuity: You know, like reading the letters out with one eye covered. This determines the general condition of your eyesight.
• Muscular tests: To check the movement and alignment of the eyes.
• Examination of the cornea and iris: Checking the pupil’s response to light.
• Examination of the retina, the optic nerve and the macula: They are responsible for high-detail activities, like reading.
• Retinal scans: A picture of the back of the eye is kept to monitor any changes to the retina, macula and optic nerve over time.
• Refraction: A detailed test of the eyes focus, to determine a prescription for each eye.
• Near Refraction: To determine the specific prescription for reading glasses.
• Tonometry: The pressure of the fluid in the eyeball is measured. Higher pressure is an early warning sign of possible future glaucoma.

In an era where we accept no less than a HD TV and at least a 4G internet connection, we cannot accept to have an eye test without the assistance of some of the latest eye care equipment – and not all optometrists have that!

Here are some examples of what these amazing machines can help us do:

• OCT – Optical Coherence Tomography: This is new technology which acts like an ultrasound to look deep into the eye. The OCT scan helps us detect eye health conditions including macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinal disease years before other tests. Early detection saves your eyesight. The procedure only takes a few minutes and is completely painless and safe.
• Macular Degeneration Assessment: The macula is the central part of the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It is responsible for our clear, fine detailed vision for both distance and reading. Macular degeneration causes progressive macula damage, resulting in loss of central vision but leaving peripheral vision unaffected.
• Glaucoma Vision Assessment: Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease where there is damage to the nerve fibres in the optic nerve and retina. Because there are usually no symptoms at first, glaucoma is called “the thief of sight”. Over 300,000 Australians have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it.
• Diabetic Eye Assessment: As a diabetic, you are at greater risk for eye problems. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults. Because its initial symptoms are very slight or even unnoticeable, diabetic retinopathy often goes undiagnosed. It however, can be detected in a comprehensive diabetic OCT eye examination.
